Sunday Parkways Time!!

Spending quality time together, while getting in a workout at the same time, has been an ongoing tradition for Nancy and myself since very early on in our journey together.  When we first started biking  one of the first  events that Nancy and I rode in was Portland Sunday Parkways.  Portland Sunday Parkways is put on every month from May through September by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.  Each family friendly bike ride features a traffic free bike loop (thank you Portland Police Bureau) through one of the many beautiful sections of Portland – the bike friendliest city of them all!  Each course is designed so that there are stops along the way at city parks within that particular section of the city.  At the parks are food, entertainment, activity and information booths as well as lots of fellow bikers with whom to enjoy the day.

Northeast Sunday Parkways - Ainsworth Street

Because the Sunday Parkways provides a family friendly atmosphere we introduced our kiddos to these great events so they can share can in our love for biking too. The Parkways have become a yearly tradition now and we really look forward to making memories out on the road every year.  In addition to the Parkways we regularly go for family bike rides to a variety of destinations in the area such as the grocery store, a distant park exploration, or to another section of town for a treat.  Our family rides provide great opportunities for learning the rules of the road and cycling etiquette. Dare I say we have we have two budding PDX cyclists in the family? You bet!North Portland Sunday Parkways - Teo and I   Be it just Nancy and I or the entire clan, getting out and enjoying the sights of our beautiful city by bike is a wonderful way to spend the day.  I still remember one of the first times our son cruised down a big hill nearby and exclaimed “I’m alive!” while zipping down it. THAT was a very good day indeed!

So if you’re in the Portland area come on out for the first Sunday Parkways of the year on Sunday May 15 and enjoy a lovely time at the 2016 East Portland Sunday Parkways.  More information can be found as their website at East Portland Sunday Parkways.

Oh, by the way, our training continues toward the Covered Bridge Bicycle Tour in April we logged 107 miles toward our goal of 700 miles for the season!  Woot!!

Reformed Snuggletarians…

And then they discovered snuggletarianism and it was gooood! -Mike 4:16

What is snuggletarianism you might ask?  It’s a lovely “religion” of sorts that we invented upon discovering just how much we enjoyed snuggling one another. A religion that we have become very devout to!  You see, that’s because something very profound happened to us the evening of our first date.  Not just that we had fun at dinner, or enjoyed each others company and conversation for hours, or that we had experienced wonderful “all that jazz” into the wee hours of the morning.  You see, when it came time for us to actually sleep we cuddled up with one another in a classic spooning position and something mysterious, magical and frankly quite out of theCozy Snuggle Blankets I ordinary happened. That something was that we totally fell asleep!! This is monumental because as Nancy and I later discussed she was as much of an independent sleeper as I was.  In fact the next morning we both commented that traditionally neither one of us could stand cuddling and could not wait to roll on over to our own cozy corner of the bed and slumber free of any sort of encumbrance.

The exact reasons as to why neither one of us had experienced the shear comfort and relaxation we experienced that night we can only speculate about.  Was it that the difference in our heights allowed us to fit just right, was it that just the right pillow placement had occurred, or was it proper positioning of the moon and stars?  Who knows and who cares, we had both discovered something wonderful in each other that we had never has the pleasure of experiencing before.   Needless to say we came to the conclusion that we had just plain found the right person to snuggle up to.

From that fateful day on we have not wavered from our devout following of the snuggletarian way. In fact we attend services whenever possible!  A soothing hug before heading off to work, a re-energizing hug after a long or difficult day. A spoon or even a reverse spoon at night, in the morning, or any ol time.  Then there is the one we like to call the “enhanced” snuggle which, though I won’t go into explicit detail, transitions into some very intimate couple time lets just say.  So if you’re lucky enough to have found your cosmic cuddler take that as a VERY positive sign that the person you have discovered might just be a a great fit for you….LITERALLY!  I’m pretty darn sure neither one of us had ever said to ourselves – hey, I want to find my snuggletarian soul mate – but if we knew then what we know now we just may have.Cozy Snuggle Blankets II

We believe the benefits we experience from the closeness we share in our snuggletarian ways are many and can be felt beyond the time we share together but reather throughout our entire day.  Sometimes it seems as though we can feel every muscle relax when we cuddle or snuggle and I’m thinking it might even be lowering our blood pressure at the same time.  But you don’t just have to take my word for it because I discovered that in Santa Monica, California can be found the “Cuddle Santuary” and its founder Jean Franzblau which provides a fun and social place for people to give and receive healthy touch. She notes, “I found that when my needs for cuddling were met, I felt better in all areas of my life.” and where the philosophy “that we all deserve healthy, human touch” is very alive and well.  Jean’s website provides tools and guidelines for an array of cuddle experiences as well as the opportunity to learn the many benefits of being a cuddler / snuggler.  Who knew there was a place where professional cuddlers could be found?! Nancy and I blissfully found this out on our own but its nice to see that we aren’t the only ones who have made this wonderful discovery.  Personally I think the world could stand to benefit from this kind of thinking for sure, especially these days.

When all is said and done I guess my point to this post is that if you are lucky enough to find a special someone that can take the stress of the world away with a simple yet meaningful cuddle or snuggle then you have found something very special indeed.  In a world where “red flags” are all to commonly found in the dating pool, we believe if you happen to discover your cosmic cuddler that this is a giant “green flag”.  Just plain slowing down the world for a few minutes or more a day can really make a difference in a relationship.

Springtime in P-Town…

In Springtime a young mans (or woman’s) fancy turns to thoughts of…. biking! Right? Welllll, love too I’m sure!  Anyhoo, last weekend Nancy and I went for our first real bike ride of the 2016 season.  A lovely route that took us throughout the Northeast section of Portland and included among other sights the home turf of Beverly Cleary’s “Henry Huggins” on Klickitat Street.  Oh yeah, that lovely shot of Mount Hood was taken along the route as well!

Springtime in Portland, Oregon
Ahh, Springtime has arrived at last in the great Pacific Northwest!!

As I explained in my intro to the “Health & Fitness” section we love to go biking together if the weather is favorable. We use the “Map My Walk” app which tracks our workouts via GPS on our phones.  Its easy to use, free, and has a road bike setting…perfecto!  Last year we logged 626 miles of biking and walking throughout the area and capped off our season by riding the Banks to Vernonia Trail. The Banks to Vernonia Trail, a multi-use trail paved over a decades-old train bed, 21 miles of tree-lined, easy-grade, pathway that conducts you through sun-dappled glades and across swift, clear streams.  All tolled about 44 miles for that ride (not bad for a couple of 40 somethings).  This year our goal is to reach 700 miles and we would like to cap the riding season off with the Oregon Covered Bridge Bicycle Tour or CBBT.

So come along with us as we reach toward our goal and share some of the sights along the way.  We’ll keep you updated on our progress toward our goal…Woot!!  We would love to hear about some of the places in your neck of the woods where you love to bike as well as events both near and far that promote the great sport of biking.

The Spirit Chemist…

A couple of weeks ago Nancy and I headed down to the town of Corvallis, Oregon to meet up with some friends that we had not seen for way too long.  Corvallis is a charming little college town nestled in the middle of the Willamette Valley about 85 miles South of Portland and is the home to Oregon State University.  Our friends had planned to take Nancy and I on a “Sip Trip” of some local distillers and cider houses after enjoying a tour of their new home and being treated to a wonderful smoked salmon quiche for lunch.  Little did we know that we would discover the “Spirit Chemist” on that rainy afternoon.

We visited a couple of distillers but one of them stood out far and away from the rest.  It had almost gone unnoticed but in the distant reaches of a small business park in what is technically “Lewisburg, Oregon” stood the nondescript building that houses “Spiritopia“.  Through a driving pacific northwest rain we decided to check it out.  Upon entering the cozy confines of Spiritopia’s front room we were immediately greeted by its founder Chris Beatty.  Ordinarily, it is recommended that you call ahead before dropping into Spiritopia but as Chris told us when we first walked in…  “its your lucky day” as an OSU tour group had just left shortly before we had got there, therefore, he had plenty of unconsumed samples at the ready!

Liqueurs IIChris told us about each of his offerings… A Ginger Liqueur, an Apple Liqueur, Pomegranate Liqueur (SCOOP! We are told this will be officially released in June of 2016), and a Bourbon Style Apple Brandy.  Now, to be honest I have always thought of liqueurs as being overly sweet and syrupy but my first sip of Chris’ Ginger Liqueur turned that opinion on its ear. The taste was certainly of ginger but along with the perfect level of gingeriness were notes of vanilla & molasses as well.  I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by its suble complexity.  While we were sampling Chris started to shed some light on what made this Ginger Liqueur so special.  Ginger sourced exclusively from an organic ginger farm in Peru, a special Bourbon Vanilla sourced from Madagascar, and painstakingly refining his process until he was satisfied with the results.  I have to say things came together VERY nicely because of all of his efforts.

We then sampled the Apple Liqueur and Pomegranate Liqueur which were both amazing in thier own right, again, because of the same attention to detail that produced the Ginger Liqueur.  Those details include maticulously sourced ingredients and production processes that had been finely honed through the use of chemistry, engineering and fermentation science.  However, whether intentionally or not Chris saved what I thought was the best for last, an Apple Brandy.  Not just any Apple Brandy but a “Bourbon” style Apple Brandy.  So what makes it a Bourbon style apple brandy you might ask?  Chris told us of the barrels he uses and that they were true bourbon barrels.  One of the many things we learned that day was that for a barrel to be a true Bourbon barrel it has to of beenBlog-Image-Brandy1-280x240 (2) charred only once.   Chris uses just such barrels for this Apple Brandy.   So voila, Bourbon Style Apple Brandy!  The Bourbon Style Apple Brandy was an incredibly pleasant surprise as well.  Apple-ly but with a hint of the smoked oak in the flavor which gave it a slight but noticeable bourbon edge of caramel and vanilla.  I whispered to Nancy “we are not leaving here without some of that”!

While we were finishing up our sample tastings Chris invited us into what he lovingly called his “lab”.  I was soon to find out why he calls it this.  I asked Chris how he came to be a distiller and that is where things got very interesting.  He started telling us the story of how the building we were in was at one time the sight of Trillium Fiber Fuels. A place where clean, renewable fuel ethanol was derived from rye-grass and straw.  From his website – “The original plan was to save the world by making clean renewable fuel ethanol from rye-grass and wheat straw. Turns out that the world was not that interested in being saved yet. We’d rather be fracking. Bummer”.  You see Chris’ credentials include a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and a masters in Materials Science and I, being in the engineering world myself, found this fascinating.  Chris has dubbed himself the “Spirit Chemist” and rightfully so.

Chris explains it this way “I realized that my skills in fermentation, distillation, and enzymatic carbohydrate chemistry would be very useful in the spirits business (and probably more fun!). Since liqueurs and whiskeys have always been my favorites, those are the areas I decided to pursue. The liqueurs are the focus of the business as the unique whiskey we would like to make is stuck in a morass of government red tape (so much for innovation…)”  The story of that “unique whiskey” needs to be heard to be believed though.

GingerLab-280x240Well, that’s a bit of a story says Chris.  “Back when I was doing ethanol research, I discovered some cool stuff about how to make a unique whiskey from rye-grass. Not rye the grain, but rye-grass like turf and grazing. The flavor it adds is kind of earthy/smoky and reminds me of a good cachaca.  Anyway, we still hope to do that at some point. However, the “new-ness” turned out to be a bit of a problem because the TTB (Alcohol Trade and Taxation Bureau) wasn’t sure if they could approve it. So they asked the FDA and now there is plenty of red tape to go around. Nobody thinks there is a problem, but nobody wants to be the one to say so. Sheesh. If it ever gets straightened out, we will start getting some in oak to mature”.  Chris just happened to have a sample of this unique whiskey available and was kind enough to let us sample it.  Personally I think he’s on to something here.  The taste was definitely earthy but in a way like I have never experienced.  You could smell the rye grass but it tasted like anything but grass.  Very unique indeed!  Good luck with that red tape Chris!

As Chris continued to show us his lab, the attention to detail and just plain engineering skill with which he creates his products was awe inspiring.  We witnessed a batch of Brandy coming out of his still (with components creatively engineered by Chis – including a billiant IKEA hack, using a waste basket as part of a heat exchanger) and were treated to an education about why you can’t drink the beginning or the ending of the run.  The finished product is made from the middle of a run.  We were even treated to the “birth” of a brandy by tasting it straight out of the barrel as Chris uncorked it.  We all felt honored that he shared this special moment with us.  Thank you for that Chris!!  And thank you for using your extensive powers of engineering prowess and skills in the area of chemistry for the power of good in this world!

So if you’re ever in the Corvallis area and have an interest in things that are distilled I would highly recommend taking the time to get in contact with Spiritopia and arrange a visit if you can.  It is definitely worth taking the time to go visit this hidden gem. And while you’re at it I would also highly recommend taking some of the Spirit Chemists’ delicious creations home with you.  They are the icing on a very fascinating cake!

Cheers!

Mike & Nancy

Cheese Glorious Cheese!

Cheese!! Glorious cheese!!  That wonderful food that comes in so many varieties to choose from that one barely knows where to begin when describing its splendor.  Robust? Earthy? Sharp? Mushroomy?  Or perhaps just good and stinky.

Any way you slice it cheese has played a celebrated role in the relationship between Nancy and I from the moment I typed those fateful words on my laptop “cheese eh?” back when we found each other.  Our love affair with all things cheesy started with our very first date where we shared a, romantic, oooey, gooey, cheese fondue experience.  Our romance with cheese grew throughout our dating days as we explored more places where good cheese could be found and discover more types of cheese to enjoy.  As Nancy and I continued onCheese Glorious Cheese! our journey of love together we expanded our cheese horizons right up to and including our wedding day.  Since that happiest of days we have made cheese part of many celebrations both as a couple and with the entire family.  Its little wonder we still love and savor having a good stinky cheese together.

As a matter of fact,  for our first Valentine’s Day together I chose as her gift a book of CHEESE… Laura Werlin’s “Cheese Essentials”  a beautifully put together book on cheese education and information with cheeses from around the world.  It still resides prominently in our kitchen to this day. Buy it here

Clearly we are cheese-aholics! In this section of our blog we will be sharing the cheesy adventures we’ve had as well as any cheesy goodness that we continue to find and all the wonderful stuff that we have discovered along the way.  Just some of of those discoveries include local establishments that specialize in cheese and wine that have become some of our favorite places to frequent. We’ll share great places we have found where you can buy specialty cheeses that you have seen and perhaps want to try out.  And for those who might be a bit hesitant to try a cheese that is unfamiliar to you we will occasionally do a “cheese review” in order to point out some of our cheese faves.  Add to that to guidance on how to create an ultimate cheese plate for entertaining and you’ve got enough stinky, cheesy, goodness to keep the cheese lover in your life slap happy for a very long time indeed.  Also, feel free to chime in with your favorite cheese stories as well, we’d love to hear them!

Traditions…

When I recall the memories of my youth, those that stand out above all others are the memories of some special event or family get together centered around a meal. How can I ever forget coming home after a long day at school to find out that my mom was making her Tuna Casserole (my favorite!) and how something seemingly so simple would totallySmokey's Hot Oven Pizza make my day. Then there were those Saturday night movie rental nights when we would always get a hot and delicious pizza via take out from our favorite local pizza joint. Ahh, I can still taste that Smokey’s Hot Oven Pizza…  On special occasions there were those family get-togethers during the holidays where aunts, uncles, cousins and maybe even a family friend or two would all gather together for a feast that would leave you full for at least a couple of days.  Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and GRAVY, you know, ALL that good stuff.

Fast forward to today and the at times hectic world we live in and sometimes it seems families forget the seemingly simple act of sitting down to a dinner together where they enjoy a tasty meal, enjoy each others company, and actually talk to one another.  In our family, like I’m sure others experience, the fact that we are a blended family makes the “traditional” meal time all that more difficult to pull off.  However,  even with our logistically challenged kiddo schedule Nancy and I feel that it is very important to maintain that sense of family connection that happens with all of the family around the dining table.  We both believe that the familiarity and consistency provided by those times is so very valuable to our kids as they grow older and look back at the best times of their youth.

Because of our philosophy of the importance of having family dinners whenever possible as well as getting together for all sorts of special occasions with extended family whenever we can, we have formed some “traditions” of our own over the past few years.  In this section of our blog we will share a few of those traditions and we hope you share some of your traditions as well.  We will also try to demonstrate that even if you think you don’t have time you can still make some traditions of your own. After all when one of the first things your kiddo says when picking him up from school is… “can we have Tuna Casserole for dinner tonight, dad?“, we must be doing something right huh?

Eating in…

Quiche Love...     Now I am probably a tad biased when it comes to the posts that will appear in this category but I have never in all my days had so many wonderful things come out of a kitchen that I’ve lived under the roof of in all my life.  In short, Nancy is a Jedi Master when it comes to making wonderful meals and treats appear as if like magic from the same room in our house where the best performance I manage is making kick ass  cup of coffee in!

I think where her greatest strength lies is in being able to take an existing recipe and make some little change to it that makes what would be a good result turn out great.  It baffles and yet delights me every time!  I’m not the only one so impressed either.  Our son has remarked on numerous occasions while devouring his dinner or a tasty desert  “we should open a (fill in the blank) restaurant”!  Those suggestions have included a Taco Salad restaurant, a Pancake restaurant, as well as a Beef Stroganoff restaurant among many others.

So in this section we will attempt to share some of those dishes that are sure fire winners from our kitchen.  It should be fun.  And, oh yeah, my old family recipe for Tuna Noodle Casserole simply can’t be beat either!

Eating Out…

As I have mentioned elsewhere in the blog Nancy and I have the good fortune to live in Portland, Oregon a haven for all things “foodie” related.  In fact, there are many a local haunt that have been featured on one of those networks that feature food (notice how I did not say Food Network).  Sometimes the fact that there are so many great places to choose from can lead to one visiting the same great places over and over again when in fact there is so much to discover.

One of the things that keeps Nancy and I a happy couple is the thrill of finding a restaurant, hole in the wall, food cart, bakery, cocktailery etc, etc in our area that has one of the best cheese plates, burgers, happy hours, Manhattans etc, etc.    Naturally we have our favorites around town and in this section we will share them in all their splendor!

Biscuit Joy       In addition to local fare, occasionally we will feature a yummy venue from “out of town” a rare treat indeed!  So get ready for our picks on where to find the most scrumptious stuff in the City of Roses as well as points beyond and see which ones merit our very special LFLAL five “Mmm” rating.  Also, feel free to chime in with a favorite from where ever you are reading this from.  We’d love to hear about it!

Pop quiz time!  Does anyone have a guess at where that pic of those lovely biscuits was taken??  They are really damn good especially when paired with the “Kentucky Mules” pictured in the background!
